SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALSSDG Poster

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2105, a plan of action for people, the planet and prosperity, which also seeks to strengthen universal peace and access to justice. The Member States of the United Nations approved a resolution in which the major challenge to the world at this time is acknowledged as being the eradication of poverty and claimed that, without this, sustainable development cannot be achieved.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development proposes 17 Sustainable Development Goals, with 169 targets of an integrated and indivisible nature that span economic, social and environmental issues. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are to:

  1. End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
  2. End hunger, achieve food security and adequate nutrition for all, and promote sustainable agriculture.
  3. Guarantee a healthy lifestyle and foster wellbeing for all people in all States.
  4. Guarantee equitable and inclusive quality education and life-long learning opportunities for all.
  5. Attain gender equality, empower women and girls everywhere
  6. Guarantee water and sanitation for all for a sustainable world.
  7. Ensure access to affordable, sustainable and reliable modern energy services for all.
  8. Promote strong, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and decent work for all.
  9. Develop resilient infrastructures, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
  10. Reduce inequality within and among countries.
  11. Build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and human settlements.
  12. Guarantee sustainable consumption and production patterns.
  13. Take urgent measures to address climate change and its effects.
  14. Attain conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources, oceans and seas to ensure sustainable development.
  15. Protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, manage the sustainable use of forests, address desertification and halt and revert the degradation of the land, and halt all biodiversity loss.
  16. Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, facilitate access to justice for all and create effective, responsible and inclusive institutions at all levels.
  17. Strengthen the means of implementation of and revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.

The new strategy will govern the global development programmes for the next 15 years. By adopting these goals, States undertake to mobilise the resources necessary for their implementation through partnerships particularly focused on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable.
